Going Green at Halloween: Celebrate and Love the Environment

With £474 million spent last year on Halloween retail in the UK, there’s a good chance that you’re adding to this number.  However, with this kind of consumption, it’s probably safe to say that a lot of this spending isn’t helping the environment.

If you want to play a role and help the earth this Halloween/Samhain, here are some green tips to keep in mind when shopping for anything Halloween.

#1 Avoid the Plastics

So many costumes are made from cheap plastics that come from China.  These mass-produced costumes may look cute, but they transmit a dangerous chemical known as polyvinyl chloride.  If you insist on purchasing a costume, make sure that you find one that is recyclable.  If you insist on purchasing a mass-produced costume, consider setting it aside for a garage sale in the future.  If you want to really save money, mom-to-mom sales are a great place to find costumes for a low price.

#2 DIY

Creating your own costume isn’t only fun, but it’s a great way to gather some items from around the house.  Since there are literally thousands of ideas floating around out there, it’s up to you to decide what you want to do.  A great place to find costume ideas is via Pinterest and Etsy.

#3 Be Natural

Half the fun during Halloween are the sugary treats.  If you’re going to hand out candy, consider a company that truly cares about the environment.  Look for ingredients such as cane sugar, fruit juice and other natural flavors.  These sweets can be a lot healthier and even tastier!  Aside from candy, other treats like granola, popcorn and dried fruit can be a healthy option to consider as well.

#4 Reusable Bags

Instead of toting around a plastic bin or plastic grocery bag while going door to door, consider using a reusable bag, such as one that you get from your local grocery store.  If your child doesn’t want to lug about a reusable bag with a giant grocery store logo, some stores will sell similar bags in a Halloween theme.  If you really want to be festive, purchase a blank canvas bag and have them paint it with non-toxic paints.

#5 Decorating

Try to steer clear of the plastics and waxy candles when decorating.  Instead, consider getting a pumpkin, bale of straw and gourds from your local farm.  When choosing a pumpkin, be sure it comes from a local and organic farm.  This is a great way to make your home look festive.  After you’re done, you can simply compost the remaining items or recycle it with your yard waste.

#6 Avoid Driving

Lastly, if you live in a popular neighborhood, skip on the driving and consider riding your bike and walking.  Yes, you may have to drive if you’re in the middle of the country, but if you can, try to find a spot that is walkable.

Have a Happy (and Safe) Halloween!

Going green isn’t that hard!  By following these tips, you’re bound to have a fun and be earth-friendly at the same time.  Have a safe and fun Samhain!
