Meet Leukocyte and Erythrocyte!

After feeling a bit fatigued from making my honeycomb blanket (look out for a future blog post on that), I decided to browse Ravelry for something simple and quick to make.

This is where I came across these adorable little blood cells! These guys are quick to make, and very simple so are perfect for practicing amigurumi and using up leftover yarn. They can also make an ideal gift for any science lover!

The Pattern

The patterns I used to make these two are made by Nuria Álvarez who writes patterns in both English and Spanish. You will also see on her store that she has written a few other sciencey crochet patterns as well. I picked the white and red blood cells as they looked easy to do, and I already had some leftover white and red yarn to use.

I followed the pattern exactly for both, and it was very easy to understand. The only difference was that I chose to use plastic eyes instead of sewing (I’m not the best at sewing!)

In addition to this, Nuria also includes tutorials showing how to do invisible decreases, which were really useful to me. I was so happy when I realised how simple it was to do, and intend to use this method in my future projects.

The Yarn

The designer uses light fingering/3 ply yarn, however this is not a requirement. I used DK weight and they still turned out great. Just remember to adjust your hook size depending on the weight that you choose!

The Hook

The hook will be dependent on what yarn you use. In the pattern the designer also recommends a smaller hook for working on the eyes.

As this is amigurumi, ensure that your stitches are tight enough so that the stuffing does not show through!
