My previous make was a scarf that uses only one skein of yarn, making it an excellent stash-buster. Today’s make follows that and is the ‘Mark My Words Bookmark; which only uses a small amount of yarn, so it is perfect for all those leftovers you have lying around!
I love stash busting designs like this, as I tend to have a lot of leftovers from my larger projects and I also love to try out different yarns without having to commit to bulk buying for a project. These quicker makes are nice and easy, no lengthy commitment and you can really see how the yarn looks and feels. Anyway, onto my latest make!

This bookmark (which I am currently using for the Kelley Armstrong novel I am currently reading) is simple, cute and useful. I was lucky enough to be able to test this pattern by the designer, Heart of Wessex.
The pattern was straightforward to follow and can be adjusted depending on how tight your stitches are, and the size of the book that you would like to use it with. So, for example, for the chain section, I used 80ch, rather than the 65 that the designer suggested so it would fit the book that I chose for the photos (A lovely copy of Jane Eyre).
Because of the ease of the design, this pattern is suitable for a beginner. It gives good practice with Dc stitches (Tr in UK terms), chain stitches, and gives you the chance to crochet into a circle. It also doesn’t take long to make at all. I think it took me around half an hour, and I’m not exactly the quickest!
The best bit about this pattern? It’s free, of course! Check out the pattern here.
I used James C Brett 4-ply baby yarn in yellow. This is the stuff I had left from when I made a virus blanket. The pattern recommends weight 2 – fine or superfine. Using the Ravelry chart, that works out as a 4-ply/5-ply weight. The yarn I used was acrylic, but I think next time I make this, I will use cotton, which I think would have a better look.

The pattern recommends a 2mm or 3mm hook. I chose a 3mm as that felt like a better option for the yarn that I was using. I also dislike using hooks smaller than 3mm as they’re just so tiny! If you need one, Lovecrafts have 2 and 3mm hooks available on their website.
